Turn long contracts into key terms checklists with Claude

Tools usedClaude

Long contracts hide important terms in dense legal language. Claude can read the full document and pull out the key terms that matter for your decision: payment schedules, termination rights, liability limits, and renewal conditions. This is useful for anyone who reviews contracts but does not have time to read every clause, or needs to brief a team before signing.

What you can make

  • A one-page checklist of key terms with risk flags (payment terms, termination clauses, liability limits, obligations)
  • A comparison table when you receive multiple contract versions or need to review similar agreements side-by-side
  • A summary for stakeholders who approve contracts but do not read the full text
  • A list of unclear or risky clauses to ask the other party about before signing

Skills and tools you need

  • Claude (free to start, some features need a paid plan): reads the contract and extracts key terms
  • A digital copy of your contract (PDF or text file)
  • Basic prompting: asking Claude which terms to look for and how to format the output
  • Optional: Google Sheets or Excel to organize the checklist and share it with your team

How to build it

  1. Upload the contract PDF to Claude or paste the text directly into a new conversation.
  2. Ask Claude to extract key terms and format them as a checklist, specifying which categories matter (payment, deadlines, termination, liability, obligations, renewal).
  3. Review the checklist Claude provides and ask follow-up questions to clarify any terms that seem unclear or risky.
  4. If you are comparing multiple contracts, upload all versions and ask Claude to highlight differences in key terms.
  5. Copy the checklist into a spreadsheet or document, add your own notes, and share it with the people who need to approve or negotiate the contract.
  6. For contracts with unusual clauses, ask Claude to flag terms that differ from standard agreements in your industry.

Prompt to copy

Use this prompt in step 2 after uploading your contract:

Review this contract and create a checklist of key terms. For each item, include:
- Term category (payment, termination, liability, renewal, obligations, etc.)
- What the clause says in plain language
- Any deadline, condition, or trigger
- Risk level: low, medium, or high

Focus on: payment terms and schedule, termination rights and notice periods, liability limits and indemnification, renewal and auto-renewal conditions, key obligations for both parties, and confidentiality or non-compete clauses.

Use this prompt in step 4 if comparing multiple contracts:

Compare these [two/three] contract versions and create a table showing how key terms differ. Highlight any terms that became more restrictive, more favorable, or were added or removed. Focus on payment, termination, liability, and obligations.

Tips

  • Upload contracts as PDF files instead of copy-pasting text when possible, so Claude can see the original structure and clause numbering.
  • Ask Claude to flag any unusual or non-standard clauses that might need legal review before signing.
  • If the contract is very long, ask Claude to summarize each section first, then drill into the sections that matter most to your decision.
